| Teacher Q & A
Please read before your lessons begin!
How long are lessons? 30, 45, or 60 minutes. Beginners usually start out with 30 minute lessons and work their way up to longer lessons when ready.
Can we just have lessons every other week? No. Lessons are weekly.
How much is tuition, and when do you prefer to be paid? Please refer to Aaron's studio Tuition page.
What if we don't like you? Since you and Aaron will be working closely together for a potentially long period of time (He's had some students for over 10 years), it's very important for you both to like each other. Because of this, Aaron thinks it's important to meet you before you commit to lessons. If you don't feel you're a good match, Aaron can happily refer you to other teachers in the area.
How long have you been teaching? The 2008-2009 School Year is Aaron's 12th year as a full-time piano teacher.
Do parents attend the lesson? Parents are always encouraged to observe their child's lesson as often as possible. Bring paper! Take notes! Ask questions and be involved.
Do you teach theory? Yes. Lots! Aaron uses the OMTA Syllabus program as a guide to teaching theory.
Do I have to learn theory and participate fully in the OMTA syllabus program? No! Aaron will taylor your lessons to suit your unique needs as an individual student. However, it's likely that you will at least learn some theory along the way.
How much practice do you require? None! Parents, if you want to pay me for going over the same thing with your kids, week after week, then Aaron will gladly accept your hard-earned money for nothing. Students, if you want to be continuously frustrated, make no progress and never get any better, then you do not have to practice. If, on the other hand, you want to get as much out of your lessons as possible, you are excited about learning how to play the piano and you want to learn a skill that will stay with you for your entire lifetime, then YES, you will have to practice.
How many recitals do you have, and do my kids have to play in recitals?Aaron holds 2 recitals per year. One in December, and one in May. He highly encourages participation in these recitals, but does not require that you participate.
Do I need a piano to practice on? YES!
- Good: An older piano in decent condition (must be tunable), or a digital keyboard with 88 keys and pedals.
- Better: An newer used piano, upright or grand, or a high-quality digital keyboard.
- The Best: A new upright or grand piano.
- Unacceptable: The $100 keyboard you can purchase at Target, Wal-Mart, Costco, etc...
What do I need to bring to weekly lessons?Yourself, a smile, a good attitude, all of your books, your 3-ring-binder, and CUT NAILS!
What do I need to remember about my lesson time?1. Please do not enter the studio before your lesson time. It is very distracting to the student before you. You may come in no more than 3 minutes before your lesson is supposed to begin. Remove your shoes inside and wait quietly.
2. Eating snacks, washing hands, and using the bathroom should be done before your lesson is supposed to start, if possible. All of these things take up lesson time, so the more you can take care of before your lesson, the more instruction time you will have.
Aaron wants you to love playing the piano. Please ask questions during your lessons! Aaron is there to help you! | |
